Saving Air – One Pot at a Time

We’ve all seen those Febreze commercials. You know the ones. Kid eats a tuna sandwich in the same kitchen that the wet dog just ran through and oh yeah, your husband forgot to take out the trash from last week. Yuck. Now you can spray deodorizer all you want, but after the smell fades…what about the things you can’t see? The stuff you continue to breathe? Solution? A trip to the landscaping dept! Take a look at these plants that will literally clean the air inside your home! Not to mention your bathrooms too!

Office Plants

Tea & Crumpets

One of the best and hardest working plants for all your formaldehyde removing needs is the Boston Fern. They are also highly efficient at removing numerous toxins from the air such as benzine and xylene. Those toxins are components of gasoline exhaust, which can come into your home through an attached garage.

Rubber Band Man

If you want to bounce away those gloomy irritants, tend to a Rubber Plant! In an office setting where most furniture is made from particle board held together by formaldehyde-based glues, this plant is perfect! They grow slowly and need very little sun making them a lyrical choice for your work space.

Out of this World

Back in the early 1980’s, an organization you may have heard of called NASA, proved that the Spider Plant removes pollutants from indoor air. Super easy to take care of, this was the perfect plant to help cleanse the air during deep space explorations. Use the Spider Plant while traveling to the moon or when just hanging out with your family in the living room!

Be at Peace

Be at peace knowing that if you have a Peace Lily in your home, benzene, formaldehyde, and other certain VOCs that are emitted by harsh cleaning products will not be a worry for you! It also has a high transpiration rate that will humidify your air. Now that’s a plant worth knowing about!

Mum’s the Word

Maybe you recently bought a home that housed a smoker. Well head on down to your local greenhouse and pickup some potted Mums! Benzene comes from glues, paints, furniture wax, detergents, and the biggest culprit? Cigarette smoke. But don’t be glum, these cheery blooms are pros at removing benzene and other irritants from inside your home.

One if by Land, Two if by Sea

Generally if you are in the garden and see something creeping past your windows, you get out the weed wacker to knock down your English Ivy. Grown outdoors and left unattended for even just a short amount of time, this plant can become unruly and cause damage to your home’s exterior. However, put it in a pot and set it inside on your window sill and it will turn into a beautiful topiary and an extremely effective formaldehyde remover!
